Quattro libri.
Quattro forme visive.
Four books.
Four visual forms.

I do not look for a formula to apply to books. Each time I start from the text, the reader and the nature of the book itself, trying to understand what visual form can truly belong to it.

Four very different projects in tone, format and purpose: a paradoxical story, a foundational classic, a therapeutic book designed to be used, and a story of civic memory.

L’erba voglio

Stefano DisegniFranco Cosimo Panini200924,5 × 30,5 cm36 pagine36 pages

An ironic, paradoxical story about a child’s desire to see everything he imagines come true immediately.

When the protagonist manages to grow the legendary “I-want grass” and eats its leaves, every thought begins to materialise. The game soon reverses: the harder he tries not to think of something, the more insistently it appears.

Working with Stefano Disegni, I looked for an equally free, witty and slightly corrosive language. I used digital tools as a way of experimenting with materiality: scratched surfaces, marks, colour and graphic design all share the tone of the story.

Iliade

Raccontata da Luisa MattiaRetold by Luisa MattiaLa Nuova Frontiera Junior201419 × 25 cm121 pagine121 pages

For a month I immersed myself completely in the epic world of one of the stories at the roots of European and Western culture.

Illustrarla per ragazzi significava entrare in un universo già sedimentato nell’immaginario collettivo — eroi, dèi, guerra, amore, perdita — cercando però una forma capace di renderlo nuovamente vivo.

Illustrating it for young readers meant entering a universe already embedded in our collective imagination — heroes, gods, war, love and loss — while looking for a form that could make it feel alive again.

I also tried to give the drawing an older, almost timeless quality: profiles, simplified forms, colour and textured surfaces move the figures away from the present and towards something more archetypal, without losing their humanity.

La giusta distanza

Anna Rita Verardo2014A4 orizzontalelandscape96 pagine96 pages

Not simply an illustrated book, but a book designed to be used.

I worked closely with psychotherapist Anna Rita Verardo, taking care not only of the illustrations but of the entire graphic design through to print preparation.

The landscape format, generous white space, paper suitable for pencils and markers, and different typographic registers are as much part of the project as the illustrations. Text, exercises and images continually change their relationship to guide children through emotions and attachment.

Nonno, cos’è il sindacato?

Angelo PetrosinoEdizioni Conoscenza202414 × 21 cm160 pagine160 pages

A dialogue between an elderly trade unionist and his grandson becomes a continuous journey between present and memory: work, rights, migration, education, dignity and the Constitution.

Faced with 160 very dense pages, I proposed abandoning the twenty large illustrations originally planned and instead distributing images throughout the narrative. The book therefore contains more than fifty illustrations, mostly cut out against white and varied in size, designed to enter the text and follow its rhythm.

The present is in colour; memories and historical episodes are treated in an almost monochrome range. Whenever the grandfather appears in the past, a red element follows him as a visual thread.

Ricerca e raccontoResearch and narrative

The historical sections are preceded by substantial visual research: period photographs and source material help me reconstruct clothing, objects, settings and, when needed, real faces with fidelity to their time.

The drawing remains narrative, but history is not invented arbitrarily: the visual form grows out of documentation as well.

The form changes because what it has to tell changes.

From paradox to epic, from therapy to civic memory: the point is not to apply a style to a text, but to find the right relationship between image, voice, rhythm and reader for each book.
