Il brief arriva spesso nel corso della giornata e l’illustrazione deve essere pronta per la chiusura del giornale. In genere ho poche ore — spesso circa tre — per leggere, individuare il centro dell’articolo e portare a termine l’immagine.
The brief often arrives during the day and the illustration has to be ready for the newspaper’s closing time. I generally have only a few hours — often around three — to read, identify the core of the article and complete the image.
Non c’è un linguaggio prefissato da applicare. Da un incarico all’altro cambiano completamente tema, tono e autore: politica, economia, salute, tecnologia, costume, relazioni. Titolo e sottotitolo sono parte del problema visivo; l’immagine deve aggiungere qualcosa al testo, non semplicemente ripeterlo.
There is no preset visual language to apply. From one assignment to the next, subject, tone and author can change completely: politics, economics, health, technology, everyday life, relationships. Headline and subhead are part of the visual problem; the image has to add something to the text rather than simply repeat it.
