The brief often arrives during the day and the illustration has to be ready by the newspaper’s deadline. I generally have only a few hours — often around three — to read, identify the core of the article and complete the image.
There is no preset visual language to apply. From one assignment to the next, the subject, tone and author can change completely: politics, economics, health, technology, social trends and relationships. Headline and subheading are part of the visual problem; the image has to add something to the text rather than simply repeat it.
I look for what needs to remain at the core, not a list of topics.
I look for a metaphor, situation or structure that interprets the text without illustrating it literally.
The assigned format — often very horizontal — is part of the solution from the outset and has to work at the newspaper’s actual printed size.
The selection comes mainly from Cronache and also includes work for Politica, Primo Piano and Tempi Liberi: different sections of the same newspaper, which I approach with the same need to read and make decisions quickly.
